Finding a new therapist can feel overwhelming. I hear from a lot of clients that it has taken months or they have gone through a few therapists never quite finding the right fit until starting with us — you’re not alone. Finding a therapist who is able to see and affirm all the intersections of your identity and a therapist who truly understands and honors your experience as a person of color, isn’t always easy, but it is absolutely possible. That is where Calamansi Counseling comes in. We serve multicultural, BIPOC, LGBTQ+ individuals and couples navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, identity, racial stress, family conflict, and the pressures of living at the intersection of multiple cultural worlds.

So many of our clients come to us after harmful experiences with other providers, the majority of whom were white (which is no surprise given that it is estimated up to 86% of therapists are white). My clients were shamed for not cutting off family relationships, or for stepping into roles that prioritized family over self, which their white therapist told them was wrong. Western therapy tends to center the self above all else, the veneration of the individual, and the emphasis on boundary culture which in many cases means sacrificing or abandoning collectivist values. At Calamansi Counseling we understand what it means to hold space and navigate all these layers and complexities.

Therapy in the DMV Area: What We Offer

  • In-person therapy in Ellicott City, Maryland — easy to access from Baltimore and Howard County. We see clients on Saturdays and our DC & Virginia clients enjoy the slower drive to have their sessions in-person.

  • Online therapy for clients across Maryland, Washington DC, and internationally. We are licensed to provide therapy in MD & DC and offer international therapy in select countries.

  • Saturday appointments and telehealth for those with busy schedules. On Saturdays we see clients between 11am-3pm for in-person or virtual therapy.

  • Somatic, trauma-informed care rooted in liberation, ancestral healing, and social justice.

We work with individuals and couples. Whether you’re seeking depression therapy in DC or trauma therapy in Maryland, we’re here for you. At Calamansi Counseling you’ll always have a place where you belong <3

Need Affordable Therapy in the DMV?

We understand cost can be a barrier for many. At Calamansi Counseling what we offer is:

  • Out-of-network support and superbills. Though we don’t take insurance, almost all of our clients are able to receive reimbursement from their insurance for session costs (plan dependent on your out-of-network benefits).

  • Limited sliding scale spots are available, feel free to reach out to see what is available.

  • Resources for low-cost therapy in the DMV including therapy funds are available on our Resources page

It is important to us that we make healing accessible to all— especially for those often left out of traditional mental health spaces. For more information on fees check out our Fees & FAQs page.
